Electrotherapy
Electrotherapy
Enquire About ElectrotherapyElectrotherapy uses controlled electrical impulses to stimulate targeted nerves or muscles as part of pain management and rehabilitation. At One Spine, we use TENS and EMS, selecting and adjusting the modality according to your condition, treatment needs and comfort level.
What Electrotherapy Helps With
TENS and EMS serve different purposes, so electrotherapy may be considered for different symptoms and rehabilitation needs.
Depending on your condition, it may be incorporated into care for acute or chronic pain management, muscle spasms and stiffness, poor blood circulation, reduced range of motion following injury, muscle atrophy associated with inactivity or disuse, nerve stimulation and post-surgical rehabilitation.
TENS and EMS: Which Approach Is Used?
TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) primarily targets sensory nerves and is used for pain management. Electrical stimulation is delivered through electrodes placed on the skin.
EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) targets motor nerves and muscle fibres. Controlled electrical pulses cause the targeted muscle to contract, allowing EMS to be used for muscle activation and rehabilitation.
Although both treatments use electrical stimulation, they are not interchangeable. The modality used depends on what needs to be addressed.
How Electrotherapy Works
Electrodes are positioned on the skin and connected to an electrical stimulation device. The device generates controlled electrical impulses that stimulate the targeted nerves or muscles.
For EMS, the electrodes are positioned over the targeted muscle. The resulting stimulation activates motor nerves and muscle fibres, producing muscular contractions that may be incorporated into a rehabilitation programme when appropriate.
Is Electrotherapy Suitable for You?
Having pain, stiffness or a rehabilitation need does not automatically mean TENS or EMS is appropriate. An assessment can help determine whether electrotherapy should form part of your treatment approach.
The choice also depends on the purpose of treatment. TENS primarily focuses on pain management, while EMS focuses on muscle contraction, activation and rehabilitation. At One Spine, we consider your condition, rehabilitation needs and comfort level when determining the appropriate approach.
Discuss Your Rehabilitation Needs
If pain, muscle spasms, stiffness, reduced movement or muscle rehabilitation needs are affecting your daily activities, speak with our team about your situation. We can assess whether TENS, EMS or another suitable rehabilitation approach should be considered as part of your care.
Frequently Asked Questions About Electrotherapy
Electrotherapy may form part of rehabilitation following an injury, including when reduced range of motion or muscle activation needs to be addressed. Whether it is appropriate depends on your individual condition and rehabilitation needs.
EMS may be used for muscle activation and for muscle atrophy associated with inactivity or disuse. An assessment can help determine whether EMS is suitable for your rehabilitation needs.
At One Spine, electrotherapy may be incorporated into a broader rehabilitation approach where suitable rather than being treated as a standalone solution for every condition.
