Scoliosis Rehabilitation

Scoliosis is a three-dimensional spinal condition involving sideways curvature and rotational changes of the spine. At One Spine Chiropractic & Physiotherapy Centre, we provide scoliosis assessment and non-invasive management using approaches including SpineCor Dynamic Bracing, scoliosis-directed exercises and the Schroth Method according to the individual's curve and needs.

What Scoliosis Care Helps With

Scoliosis can affect shoulder and hip symmetry, rib cage appearance, posture, muscular balance, walking, movement and comfort during everyday activities. During the growing years, physical changes such as uneven shoulders, uneven hips or rib prominence may become noticeable.

Assessment helps identify the characteristics of the spinal curve so that monitoring and management can be considered according to the individual's circumstances.

Common Scoliosis Curve Patterns

Scoliosis can affect different areas of the spine, and the curve pattern can vary considerably between individuals.

Common types of scoliosis including lumbar, thoracic, thoracolumbar and combined scoliosis

Common patterns include lumbar, thoracic, thoracolumbar and combined scoliosis. Identifying the curve's location and characteristics is important because scoliosis management and exercises should be adapted to the individual's spinal pattern.

When to Consider a Scoliosis Assessment

Parents or individuals may consider an assessment when noticing:

  • An abnormal sideways spinal curve
  • Uneven shoulders or hips
  • One shoulder blade appearing more prominent
  • Rib prominence, particularly when bending forward
  • An apparent difference in leg length
  • Changes in walking pattern or posture

Scoliosis assessment may include the Adam's Forward Bend Test, where the back and rib cage are observed while the individual bends forward. If scoliosis is suspected, an X-ray may be recommended to examine the curve and measure the Cobb angle. A Cobb angle greater than 10 degrees is used to define scoliosis.

Our Scoliosis Management Approach

Scoliosis care should not use the same programme for every patient. At One Spine, we consider the individual's spinal curvature and rehabilitation needs when planning care.

Management may include SpineCor Dynamic Bracing, Schroth Method scoliosis-directed exercises, and chiropractic or physiotherapy care where appropriate.

SpineCor is a dynamic, flexible brace that is custom-fitted to the individual. It is designed to support postural correction during movement and can be worn under clothing and during daily or sporting activities. According to our approach, customised bracing may be recommended for curves above 20 degrees depending on the patient's circumstances.

Schroth Method for Scoliosis

The Schroth Method is a scoliosis-specific exercise approach customised according to the individual's spinal curvature. Its three-dimensional approach focuses on de-rotating, elongating and stabilising the spine and trunk.

Exercises may address muscular symmetry, postural alignment, breathing towards the concave side of the body, core stability, movement and coordination, pelvic alignment and postural awareness. The exercises are adapted to the patient's particular curve rather than using identical movements for everyone.

Why Early Assessment Matters

Scoliosis identified during the growing years may continue to progress, particularly when the spinal curve is more significant. Recognising changes early allows the curve to be assessed and monitored so that an appropriate management approach can be considered.

Rehabilitation goals vary between individuals and may include improved posture, stability, movement, coordination or comfort, as well as management of curve progression. These are treatment goals rather than guaranteed outcomes.

Worried That You or Your Child May Have Scoliosis?

If you have noticed uneven shoulders or hips, rib prominence, changes in posture or an abnormal spinal curve, our team can assess the situation and discuss whether further investigation, monitoring, scoliosis-directed rehabilitation or SpineCor Dynamic Bracing should be considered.

Frequently Asked Questions About Scoliosis

Chiropractic care should not be expected to completely straighten the spine in most scoliosis cases. Management may instead focus on posture, mobility, comfort, physical function and appropriate management of curve progression.

SpineCor is a custom-fitted, dynamic and flexible brace used as part of scoliosis management. It is designed to support postural correction while allowing movement during everyday and sporting activities.

No. Scoliosis-directed exercises should be adapted to the location and characteristics of the individual's spinal curve. At One Spine, the Schroth Method is used to provide curve-specific exercise rehabilitation.
